Cronulla Point Jan 29, 2011
I love surfing. I have been surfing for a number of years now but last year was easily my favorite. For years my friends and I have been surfing on the long stretch of sand at Cronulla beach, however, last year we decided to change that. We took a chance (not being locals) and jumped off the rocks at Cronulla Point. Initially, I thought we would be told to leave or bullied out of the surf spot by locals but everyone there is super nice and friendly (except one guy). It became our new surfing ground and my friend Andrew and I have been surfing there pretty much every Saturday and Sunday morning ever since.
The advantages of surfing at the point is that the waves are always going the same direction (right); there are less people (mostly locals); there is no sand; we are surfing over rocks and coral; and you can jump off the rocks and be out the back ready to catch a wave much faster than getting out the old fashioned way, which involves a lot of duck-diving.
It's not just the surfing I love. It's the discipline of waking up at 5am every weekend. It's always a struggle, often only having had maybe 5 hours sleep but it's always worth it. The winds at that time of morning are non-existent which means cleaner, smoother water. Surfing at sunrise is the best start to a day. It has become a weekly routine of watching the sun rise over the water - I enjoy seeing the sun come over the horizon every time.
So this year we have continued to surf there every weekend. Surfing on the long stretch of sand or at Maroubra beach is a nice change every now and then but I can't really imagine surfing anywhere else but at The Point most of all.
